Guide: After escaping the cluthes of Queen Elizabeth the First in Shakespeareian London, the Doctor and Martha head off to New Earth (the Doctor bends his 'one trip only' rule with a one trip into the past and one into the future).
Upon their arrival to New Earth, they find it deserted except for a few emotion sellers (almost like drug dealers) and two people to kidnap Martha. They take Martha into the depths of the freeway to the fast lane, which is only accessible by people with three or more people travelling together. However, deep in the bowels of the fast land, a monster is lurking.
The Doctor meets up with another cat person (Branigan) (pictured above) when he ventures down into the freeway. When he learns that the car Martha's in has gone further down, he jumps from car to car down until he is just above the fast lane, where he sees the Macra. Crab creatures who like dirty places.
Just before the Doctor can think of a way to fix this, he is summoned away to a place above the city. It is here he meets his old friend, the Face of Boe, who is dying. The Doctor finds out what happened to the city and New Earth and helps the Face of Boe release the people trapped on the freeway (which has been keeping them alive for years) but the efforts kill the Face of Boe, who reveals his final message to the Doctor - "You are not alone."
